An independent chairman candidate was shot dead and ten others injured after a clash erupted between the supporters of Awami League and the candidate in Bharara Union of Pabna Sadar Upazila on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Yasin Ali, 40, was the son of Mozammel Hossain of Bharara village and cousin of another independent candidate Sultan Mahmud. Yasin was running for the polls with the 'Pineapple' symbol.

The other injured have been admitted to Pabna General Hospital.

According to Pabna Sadar police, the clash ensued from a scuffle between the two groups over pasting electoral pamphlets of independent candidate Sultan Mahmud Khan and Awami League candidate Abu Saeed Khan at Koladi Chara Battala in Bharara around 9:00am.

Both sides used locally made weapons along with firearms. Ten people from both sides sustained gunshot wounds. Yasin died on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital from Pabna in critical condition, police said.

“A man named Yasin, who was injured in the pre-poll violence, had died on the way to Rajshahi. Additional police have been deployed in the area to thwart further violence. The situation remains calm now. Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is received,’’ said Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Masud Alam.
