A Union Parishad member and Awami League leader of Char Iswar union in Noakhali's Hatiya was shot and hacked to death by miscreants.
The incident took place in front of the house of UP Chairman Abdul Halim Azad near Khaserhat Government Primary School around 2:00am on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Rabindra Chandra Das, 48, son of Swatish Chandra Das of Char Iswar Ward No. 3. He was the current Union Parishad (UP) member of that ward and a member of upazila Awami League.
Relatives of the deceased claimed the killing took place because of factional feud and previous dispute.
According to local sources, Rabindra Chandra Das was returning home in Ochkhali from Char Ishwar on a motorcycle with Al Amin, president of Upazila Sramik League. On the way, a group of miscreants fired at them in front of the house of UP Chairman Abdul Halim Azad near Khaserhat Government Primary School in Char Ishwar.
Al Amin, who was on the back of the motorcycle, managed to run away but Rabindra was caught by the attackers, who first shot Rabindra and then hacked him.
Later, a team of patrol police reached the spot and recovered Rabindra's body.
Al-Amin said, "As we approached the Azad chairman's house on our way, the chairman's nephew Sohail, his son Ami, Rahim Dakat, and Nazim shot at us. They grabbed Rabindra and hacked him to death."
Denying the allegation, Chairman Abdul Halim Azad said he was being framed for the murder.
Abul Khair, Hatia Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) said the incident was being investigated.
