There is a possibility that the US would withdraw restrictions placed upon the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), said the agency’s Director General (DG) Md Khurshid Hossain on Thursday.

He made the remark while talking to journalists after placing a floral wreath at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at 32 Dhanmondi in the capital, after he received Grade-1 status in the service.

Replying to a question about the sanctions, he said RAB will not face any problems in carrying out election duties.

“We have replied (to the US) with evidence of some RAB officials. In that case, there is no hindrance to our work,” he added.

He said the US is now satisfied with the evidence that the RAB provided, adding that those who had placed the ban are now praising RAB’s role.

Khurshid also said the elite law-enforcement agency is always ready to face any challenges to establish peace in the country.

“We want to continue the development of our country. We are ready to face any challenges,” he said.

The RAB DG said, “We are maintaining zero-tolerance against terrorists and drugs. The RAB will always uphold human rights.”

Responding to a question about the snatching of two death row militants from the court premises, he said there was a “lack of coordination.”

“There was a failure of our (law enforcement agencies) forces in the case of abducting two militants from the court premises,” he said.

He said during the election time, RAB will be under the Election Commission’s control.

“All parties will participate in the next elections. We will carry out the main responsibility to ensure a free and fair election,” he said.

Spokesperson of the RAB-Director Legal and Media Wing Commander Khandaker Al Moin and other senior officers were present during the homage.
