Vaccine assistance strengthens Bangladesh-US ties: Maleque

Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Monday said the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States has become stronger as the US provided 61 million vaccines to Bangladesh to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The minister made the comments while visiting vaccine assistance activities provided by the US at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital, said an official release.

"The US has stood by Bangladesh through providing medical equipment alongside vaccine donation when the country was struggling to handle the coronavirus pandemic," he said.

United States (US) undersecretary for political affairs Victoria Nuland, Senior Secretary Lokman Hossain Mian, Director General of Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) Prof Dr Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam, among others, were present on the occasion.

The health minister said when vaccine scarcity was seen across the world, US President Joe Biden has sent Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to Bangladesh to combat the spread of the deadly virus.

The United States is committed to further expanding existing good relations with Bangladesh, said US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland. She expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the people of Bangladesh, saying that Bangladesh was on the side of the US during various crises in the past.
