Violence in city on Mar 26: Mamunul, 16 others sued

A case has been filed against 17 people including the Hefazat-e-Islam’s Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque in connection with the clashes and violence in the city’s Baitul Mukarram National Mosque area on March 26.

Khandaker Arifuzzaman, a businessman in the city’s Wari area, filed the case with Paltan Model Police Station on Monday night, said Abu Bakar Siddique, officer-in-charge of the police station.

The case was filed on charge of vandalising shops and vehicles, carrying out an arson attack on vehicles and attacking people during Hefazat’s demonstrations on March 26 at Baitul Mukarram Mosque area.

The plaintiff claimed that he was also physically assaulted by the Hefazat men during the clash.

Besides, 2000-3000 unidentified men also have been made accused in the case.

On March 26, at least 50 people, including several journalists, were injured in a clash between Muslim devotees and police in Baitul Mukarram National Mosque area in the afternoon.

Clashes erupted when police barred people from bringing out a procession after Jum’a prayers protesting against the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Several cases were filed in this connection.
