Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Friday said the voters will be able to exercise their franchise freely amid flawless security system on January 7.

"Members of Bangladesh Police are all set to discharge their duties on the occasion of the 12th National Parliament Election across the country,” the IGP said at a media briefing on election security at capital's Willes Little Flower School and College.

“We have completed all the necessary preparations and briefed each and every member of the police force about their responsibilities. We would provide security at total 42,025 poling centres across the country."

Warning against any kind of sabotage attempt marking the election, the police chief said such effort will not bring any good for them and strong punitive action will be taken in this regard, reports BSS.

"Armed forces, BGB, RAB, Ansar and Village Defence Party will perform their election duties from their respective positions. We are all set to hold a free and fair election with support from all the concerned parties. Our intelligence activities are on to hold the election successfully and our detectives are on guard. Our intelligence monitoring is also on in the cyber space," he added.

The IGP further said police received intelligence report on the plotting of saboteurs, adding, "They had plans of charging some cocktails to create panic among people. But they would not be able to do anything as we have enough forces, training and logistic support. I would like to assure the people that highest security system has been adopted marking the election."

He urged people to take help of nearby police station or to call national emergency helpline number 999 in any emergency.

Replying a question on the activities of militants, the IGP said many top militant leaders have already been arrested and they do not have any ability to carry out subversive activities.
