Voting in 4th phase UP polls concludes

Voting in the fourth phase of 6th Upazila Parishad election has concluded in 60 upazilas across the country. Polling began at 8am Wednesday, and continued till 4pm uninterrupted.

This phase concludes the sixth UP polls. However, voting in 20 upazilas, which were postponed due to the impacts of Cyclone Remal, will be held on June 9.

In the fourth phase, out of 60 upazilas, voting will take place by electronic voting machines in 6 and by ballot paper in 54 upazilas. Besides, a chairman, three vice chairman and a female vice chairman have already been elected unopposed.

A total of 721 candidates, including 251 for the posts of chairman, 265 for the posts of vice chairman, and 205 for the post of female vice chairman, are contesting in this election. Around 2.17 crore voters from 58 municipalities and 874 unions will exercise their voting rights.

There are 7,825 polling stations in the election.

Out of the country's 495 upazilas, 485 eligible upazilas are voting in four phases this time. Voting was held in 139 upazilas of the first phase on May 8. In these upazilas, about 36 per cent votes were cast, and 28 people were elected unopposed in the first phase.

On May 21, in the second phase, 22 people were elected unopposed in 156 upazilas. The voter turnout in this phase was 38 per cent.

Meanwhile, 36.24 per cent votes were cast in 87 upazilas during the third phase on May 29.
