First phase of the sixth upazila parishad election is underway from Wednesday morning. Voting began from 8am, and will continue till 4pm. Elections are being held in 139 upazilas in the current phase.
According to the Election Commission, in the first phase, out of 139 upazilas, 22 have EVMs, while the rest are using ballot papers. Among the 1,635 candidates contesting, 570 are vying for chairman positions, 625 for vice chairman, and 440 for the post of female vice chairperson.
Voting is taking place in upazilas under Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet Cumilla, Chattogram.
The election is going to be held in 481 upazilas in four phases. Polls will take place in the first phase on May 8, the second phase on May 11, the third phase on May 18, and the fourth phase on May 25.
