Water levels of major rivers mostly steady in Brahmaputra basin

Water levels of major rivers remained mostly steady with both falling and rising trends at places during the past 24 hours till 9:00am on Friday in the Brahmaputra basin.
 
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said the rate of onrushing water from upstream significantly reduced during the period in the basin with almost no rainfalls inside Bangladesh in downstream.
 
According to a bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB, the recorded rainfalls during the last 24 hours were 41mm at Cherrapunji, 109mm at Jalpaiguri and 98mm at Dibrugarh points of the northwestern Indian states.
 
The Brahmaputra is in a steady state while Jamuna is showing a rising trend and water levels of both the rivers may rise in the next 24 hours.

"In the next 24 hours, the flood situation in Kurigram district may improve in the Brahmaputra basin," the bulletin added.
 
Due to fall in water levels during the last 24 hours, the Dharla was flowing by only 6cm above its danger mark (DM) at Kurigram and Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark by 21cm at Hatia points in Kurigram at 9:00am on Friday.
 
"All other major rivers and tributaries were flowing below their respective danger marks in the Brahmaputra basin," Acting Chief Engineer of the BWDB's Rangpur Zone Engineer Muhammad Amirul Haque Bhuiyan told BSS on Friday.

The Dudhkumar was flowing below its danger mark by 11cm at Pateshwari and Brahmaputra below the danger mark by 65cm at Noonkhawa and 31cm at Chilmari points in Kurigram and Upper Atrai was flowing below the danger mark by 27cm at Bhushirbandar point in Dinajpur at 9:00am on Friday.
 
During the period, the Jamuna marked rise at all points during the last 24 hours and was flowing below the danger mark by 50cm at Fulchhari, 134cm at Shaghata, 50cm at Bahadurabad, 30cm at Sariakandi, 49cm at Kazipur and 60cm at Sirajganj points.
 
Despite a little rise in the water level during the last 24 hours, the Ghaghot was flowing below the danger mark by 69cm at Gaibandha point at 9:00am on Friday.
 
Meanwhile, incidents of sporadic erosion of riverbanks with unstable soil texture were reported from few places alongside the Teesta, Dharla, Brahmaputra and other rivers in the Brahmaputra basin during the last few days.
 
"We are conducting riverside bank protection works on an emergency basis at a few vulnerable points alongside major rivers in Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts," Bhuiyan added.
 
The district and upazila administrations have further intensified relief activities in affected areas of flood-hit northern districts to stand beside deluge-hit people and mitigate their sufferings.
 
Divisional Commissioner Md Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan said flood situation is being monitored closely and necessary steps are being taken when and where needed in deluge-hit districts of Rangpur division.
