For at least 15 years, the country has experienced numerous incidents of disappearances, and a lack of freedom of speech and media. There had been a lack of accountability as many unscrupulous government officials, including law enforcement agencies and those close to power, engaged in abuses of power, embezzling vast amounts of money, and sending it abroad.

Even ministers and members of parliament were more focused on their personal interests rather than serving the people. Government institutions, including banks and other financial entities, were in a very fragile state.

People from all walks of life were extremely angered by the Awami League Government’s role. In this context, student rallies began on July 1 and escalated from July 19, initially demanding reforms to quotas for freedom fighters in civil service jobs, which later evolved into a mass anti-government movement. During this protest, students received support from across the country, including thousands of low-income individuals who joined the movement.

Finally, Sheikh Hasina fled the country after resigning in the face of widespread protests. This marks the first time in Bangladesh’s history that a head of government has fled the country.

The people of the country are now waiting for a new Bangladesh, one free of discrimination and repression. They desire a peaceful Bangladesh where the rule of law is established and expect freedom of speech and freedom of the media.

Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, said they achieved victory with the support of the country’s people. “We want to establish a new Bangladesh where people can live without any tension. We want a discrimination-free Bangladesh where people will receive proper education, healthcare, and other facilities without hassle. They can speak and move freely,” he said.

Rakib Hasan, a rickshaw puller in Dhaka, expressed his jubilation to The Business Post, saying that the country felt like hell before, but now it feels like heaven. “We hope that the future Bangladesh will be accountable to us,” he said.

“We want to live peacefully and without any oppression or hassle. The next government officials should work for the people only,” he remarked.

Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Monday said, “Inshallah, we will march towards a beautiful future together. Justice will be ensured for each death and injustice.”

The question arises as to who will lead the future Bangladesh. In this regard, people hope that the future leader will be beneficial for the country.
