Will assist Bangladesh in national polls if requested: UN envoy

United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Mia Seppo has said that the global organisation will provide electoral assistance to Bangladesh in the next national election if the government makes any request.

Mia Seppo made the statement at an event titled ‘DCAB Talk’ organised by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the Foreign Service Academy on Sunday.

The United Nations does not interfere in the electoral process of any country unless it is asked by its government, the UN resident said.

“If the Bangladesh government seeks our assistance in the next national election, we will extend our cooperation,” she added.

Responding to a question, Mia Seppo said, “We are in talks with the government to stop the misuse of digital security act (DSA).”

Regarding the Rohingyas in Bangladesh, Seppo said, "The crisis is not only humanitarian but also political. Therefore, it is not being resolved yet as members of the UN Security Council have so far failed come to a political agreement.”‎
