A woman was killed as she was dragged by a car for several hundred yards on the Dhaka University (DU) campus on Friday.

The victim was Rubina Akter, 45, wife of late Mahbubur Rahman Khan, a resident of Tejkunipara in the city.

Azhar Zafar Shah, a former associate professor of DU’s Department of International Relations, was driving the car.

Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Jafar said Rubina was going to her brother’s house riding a motorcycle with her brother-in-law Nurul Amin in the afternoon.

The car hit the motorcycle near the police station and both of them fell from the bike, he said.

“As Rubina’s clothes stuck to the bumper of the car, she was dragged by the vehicle from there to Nilkhet.”

SI Jafar said though the pedestrians shouted from behind and asked the driver to stop his car, he did not pay any heed.

Later, the locals intercepted the car and Rubina was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. “She died there while undergoing treatment,” the police official added.

Meanwhile, an angry mob caught and beat the former DU teacher and handed him over to the police.

The body was kept at the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
