A woman named Jannat Ara Jharna has filed a rape case against Hefazat-e-Islam leader Maulana Mamunul Haque with the Sonargaon Police Station in Narayanganj on Friday.
The case has been filed under the Women and Child Abuse Suppression Act in connection with rape on the promise of marriage. The case number is 30.
Although Mamunul Haque claimed her to be his second wife, Jannat did not call herself Mamunul’s wife in the case statement.
Jannat alleged that Mamunul made physical relation with her, cashing in on her helplessness and promising marriage. But when she approached him for marriage in different times, Mamunul dilly-dallied to marry her. Mamunul had been taking her to different hotels and resorts since 2018.
Narayanganj’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Zaidul Alam confirmed the matter to the reporter and said that a woman named Jannat Ara Jharna had filed a rape case against Hefazat leader Mamunul who seduced her and promised to marry. They are looking into the matter.
Earlier, police rescued Jannat from a house in Mohammadpur on Tuesday on the basis of her father’s complaint.
Jannat said in the case statement about her acquaintance with Mamunul that she met Mamunul through her husband Maulana Shahidul Islam in 2005. Being a friend of her husband, Mamunul used to visit her freely.
They had been living happily before she met Mamunul. Whenever any misunderstanding surfaced between Shahidul and her, Mamunul intervened in the guise of arbitrator and started widening the distance between them, she said.
Because of Mamunul, their marital bliss evaporated. At one stage, the divorce took place on the advice of Mamnul, she further said.
Jannat also said in a case statement that she became socially, economically and socially helpless after the separation. At that time Mamunul asked me to come to Dhaka from Khulna and she did according his advice.
Later, Mamunul kept me in a house owned by one of his followers. He wooed her in many ways, aiming at seducing her. At one point she couldn’t resist his temptation as the surrounding conditions were not favourable for her at all.
Mamunul rented a sublet house on North Circular Road in North Dhanmondi and also arranged job in a beauty parlour. Mamunul was paying for her living cost in Dhaka.
Jannat alleged Mamunul talked about visiting the Royal Resort in Sonargaon on April 3. During their stay at the resort, some people detained the duo. Later, Mamunul’s followers descended on the resort and snatched them away.
But Mamunul illegally kept her in the house of an acquaintance without allowing to return to her house. He did not allow anyone to communicate with her.
Tactically, she told her eldest son about her condition and asked him to take legal procedure to free her from captivity. When the DB police rescued her later, she found out that her father had filed a general diary with the Kalabagan police station. The police later rescued her and handed of her father. Then she consulted with her family and relatives, so it became late to file the complaint, Jannat also claimed.
Earlier, Mamunul was arrested by police on April 18 from a madrasa in Mohammadpur area on different allegations including creating chaos during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.
