Woman raped in quarantine attempts suicide

An India-returnee woman, who had been allegedly raped at a Khulna quarantine centre, attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday.

Confirming the matter to The Business Post, Deputy Commissioner Helal Hossain said the woman tried to commit suicide in her room at the quarantine centre at around 8:30pm on Tuesday. She was rescued by female police officers and others present there.

He said the victim wanted to leave the centre earlier in the, but the authorities refused to let her leave as her 14-day quarantine period was yet to end.

Female police personnel have been deployed to take care of the woman, Helal added.

Senior officials of the district administration, women's affairs department and police visited the centre following the incident.

The woman was lodged at the quarantine centre since her return from India on May 4. During her stay, she fell in love with ASI Mokleshur Rahman of Khulna Metropolitan Police, but Mokleshur violated her on May 14, according to the First Information Report of a case filed by cops on the woman's complaint.

ASI Mokleshur Rahman, 44, was posted at the Khulna Primary Teachers Training Institute (PTI), designated an institutional quarantine centre, since May 1.

He was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping the young woman. The cop was also suspended following a preliminary probe.
