A worker was injured in an accident at a shipbreaking yard of Kabir Group of Industries, which produces KSRM brand steel products, amid a forced closure by the industries ministry.

The yard’s cutting assistant Mujidul Haque, 38, of Basur Hat in Noakhali, sustained injuries while working at the yard at 3:30pm on April 8 as an iron plate fell on him.

The industries ministry closed down the yard on February 14 following the death of a worker. But there are allegations that the shipbreaking yard continued its operation ignoring the ministry’s order.

Mohammad Ali, joint general secretary of Bangladesh Metal Federation, said that KSRM’s shipbreaking yard continued its operations ignoring the instructions of the ministry.

“Still, the issues relating to the death of worker Sujan are yet to be cleared and another worker Mujidul Haque sustained critical injuries. Mujidul is being treated secretly,” he said.

Ariful Islam Sujon, a cutter man of the Kabir Steel ship recycling facilities, died from injuries after being hit by an iron plate. Following the accident, the ministry of shipping issued a letter for closing the yard temporarily.
