In the ongoing workers' movement, protesters in Kaliakair's Safipur and Gazipur metropolitan's Chandra set fire to a traffic police box, a Walton Plaza showroom, and a private hospital, among other establishments.
A clash ensued when the workers chased and retaliated against the police. These incidents occurred around Tuesday noon on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Chandra and Safipur.
Confirming the incident, Kaliakair’s Mouchaak police outpost Officer-in-charge Khalid Islam said the workers set fire to the police box. The police are working to maintain law and order.
According to eyewitnesses and police, protesting workers set fire to a traffic police box in Safipur. Protesting garment workers from various factories in front of the Walton factory in Chandra vandalised the Walton Plaza showroom in Chandra, Safipur Tanha Hospital, and several shops.
Garment workers in various factories in Gazipur have been on strike since October 23 demanding a pay raise. Most factories, including DBL Group's Jinnah Complex, Mitali Fashion, Ripon Knitwear, five garment factories of Tusuka Group, Multi Fabs, M Ram Knitwear, Alim Knit Tex, PN Composite, GMS Composite, and Mukul Composite in Gazipur Metropolitan City, have declared a two- to three-day holiday from Tuesday.
Police sources said law enforcement and fire service personnel are on the scene to control the fire at the police box and hospital.
Asad Miah, an officer of the Kaliakair Fire Service, said that the workers set fire to a police traffic box.
