Massive works are underway to dispose wastes of sacrificial animals of the capital city within 24 hours as a total of 19,244 cleaners are working to finish the task.

A total of 8,930 cleaners are engaged in waste disposal in the areas of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 10,314 cleaners are working in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas, sources said.

DSCC public relations officer Md Abu Naser said cent per cent wastes of the first day’s sacrificial animals have already been disposed from five wards under the DSCC. The ward numbers are 10 (first), 53 (second), 38 (third), 41 and 37.

In DNCC, 100 per cent animal wastes have been removed in 13 wards.

Hotlines of the city corporations remain open. DSCC’s hotline numbers are 01709900888 and 02223386014 while DNCC’s control room numbers are +880255052084 and 16106.

Eid holidays for employees of waste management department of the city corporations were cancelled for the disposal of sacrificial animal waste.

Talking to journalists after offering Eid prayers at Jatiya Eidgah ground on Thursday morning, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh expressed hope that they will be more successful in removing animal waste this year than the previous years.

He requested all devotees to complete the slaughtering of sacrificial animals within two days and in any case not to take it up to the third day.

On the occasion, DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam said: “We need the support of the local people to remove the waste quickly. I am requesting everyone not to throw garbage here and there. We have given poly bags to everyone. You please throw garbage in designated places.”

Noting that many city dwellers will go to their village homes after slaughtering animals in the capital, the mayor requested all to clean out all containers and keep them upside down so that water does not accumulate as it will be helpful for everyone in view of the dengue outbreak.

“Of course, the containers on the roof where rainwater can accumulate should be kept upside down,” he said.

The main congregation (jamaat) of the holy Eid-ul Azha was held at Jatiya Eidgah ground adjacent to the High Court under the arrangement of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) amid heavy rainfall.

Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam, members of parliament, judges of the Supreme Court and High Court divisions, political leaders and senior government officials took part in the congregation.
