A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) seeking its direction for asking the government to digitise marriage and divorce registrations.
Rights organisation Aid for Men Foundation along with three victims filed the writ with the concerned wing of the High Court on Thursday.
The three victims are Md Sohag Hossain, Md Kamrul Hasan and Md Rakib Hasan -- the former husband of Tamima Sultana who recently married cricketer Nasir Hossain.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan has confirmed the matter to The Business Post.
The secretaries of ministries of Law, Information and Technology, and Religious Affairs and chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) were made respondents to the writ.
Earlier on February 24, a case was filed against cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife cabin crew Tamima Sultana by Md Rakib Hasan, the first husband of Tamima.
Rakib Hasan filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim alleging that Tamima married Nasir without divorcing him.
Later on the same day, the court directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case and submit its investigation report by March 30.
According to the case statement, Tamima got married to Rakib on February 26, 2011 and they have an eight-year-old daughter.
Tamima, a cabin crew of Saudia Airlines, had been staying in Saudi Arabia due to the Covid-19 situation since March 10, 2020. During this time, they maintained communication over the phone and on social media.
On February 14 this year, cricketer Nasir tied the knot with Tamima at a restaurant in Uttara in the capital.
According to the case statement, Rakib came to know about Nasir and Tamima’s marriage through wedding photos on social media after the news of the marriage broke.
Tamima’s ex-husband Rakib then filed a general diary at Uttara West Police Station alleging that she married Nasir without divorcing him.
Two days later on February 24, Rakib filed the case against Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana.
Meanwhile, on February 22, 2021, a legal notice was served asking the government to digitise marriage and divorce registrations.
The same rights organisation and the three victims collectively sent the legal notice through lawyer Ishrat Hasan to the authorities concerned, asking to take necessary measures in three days.
