Writ filed seeking directive against cattle markets in Covid-19 affected areas

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) seeking directive to not allow setting up cattle markets at Covid-19 affected areas in city corporations.

Confirming the matter to The Business Post, Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Eunus Ali Akond who filed the writ said, “I virtually submitted the petition as public interest litigation to the HC yesterday. I requested the court to deliver an order to stop the setting up of cattle markets in coronavirus-affected areas.”

“The HC may hold a hearing on the writ petition on Monday (July 20),” he added.

In the writ petition, the petitioner stated that the authorities have allowed cattle markets in different Covid-19 affected areas including Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, ignoring the recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Committee (NATC), which is a violation of the law and the constitution.

Earlier, on July 10, NTAC had recommended not allowing markets of sacrificial cattle in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj and Gazipur cities during Eid-ul-Azha this year to prevent the prevent further spread of infection.
