Writ petition filed seeking ban on Bigo Live, TikTok, Likee

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking a ban on Bigo Live, TikTok and Likee apps in Bangladesh.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Md JR Khan Robin filed the petition before a High Court on Wednesday.

In the petition, the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Secretary of the Ministry of Posts, Secretary of the Telecommunications and Information Ministry and the Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and others concerned have been made respondents.

Earlier on October 8, J R Khan Robin sent a legal notice to authorities concerned to ban short video and social media applications Bigo Live, TikTok and Likee and also sought necessary action within 15 days in this matter.

The notice said the younger generation is being endangered by using these apps. Morality, social values and mutual respect are being destroyed. Young people are getting involved in criminal activities by joining teen gangs and becoming violent through the use of these apps.

Young people want to gain cheap popularity by using such platforms and many of them begin to think of themselves as very popular, thus causing harm to themselves and others, the notice added.
