Writ petition seeks enhanced punishment for fake physicians

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court today seeking enhancement of punishment to life imprisonment and death sentence with incorporating provision for adequate fine for "fake" doctors.

Supreme Court lawyer advocate Md JR Khan Robin filed a writ petition as a Public Interest Litigation.

The petitioner prayed to the HC to ask the authorities concerned of the government to amend the law in this regard.

The petitioner also said that many patients are being cheated by fake doctors, who have no valid certificate and registration for practicing. Besides, these types of fake doctors are causing serious threats to the health of patients.

In the petition, the petitioner also requested the HC to ask the authorities to amend sections 28(3) and 29(2) of the Medical and Dental Council Act 2010 for enhancing the punishment.

Secretary of Ministry of Law, Secretary Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, president of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), registrar-in-charge of BMDC and others have been made respondents in the writ.

Earlier on December 2, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) sued 14 people, including the registrar-in-charge of BMDC, for their alleged involvement in providing fake medical licenses to 12 frauds posing as physicians.
