A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking its directives to investigate what caused the deaths of 84 elephants in Chattogram in last 19 years.
Supreme Court lawyer Monoj Kumar Bhowmick filed the petition on Monday.
“The HC may hold a hearing on the petition within this week,” he told The Business Post.
Environment ministry secretary, chief conservator of forests and conservator of forests in Chattogram region have been made respondents to the petition.
Seeking directive to form a high-powered committee to conduct an inquiry into the deaths of the wild elephants, Monoj Kumar said in the petition that the officials concerned of the forest department are constitutionally bound to protect wild elephants but they failed to do so.
