Youth killed in Rajshahi 'gunfight'

A young man, suspected to have been involved in child rape and murder, in Rajshahi was killed in a 'gunfight' with police at around 2:00am Thursday.

The deceased identified as Shamim, 21, was the son of late Shafiq of Bautia village under Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi.

The incident took place at Lalitonagar village of Pakari union in Godagari upazila.

Iftekhayer Alam, spokesperson and additional superintendent of Rajshahi district police confirmed the matter on Friday morning.

He said a group of miscreants attacked the police while a patrol team of police were on duty at the Kankonhat police check post.

Police fired in self-defence, started a gunfight and left one shot. He was rescued and taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in the morning. There the on-duty doctor declared him dead, he added.

Weapon and a stolen mobile phone were seized from the slain. A few days ago, the phone was stolen from the house of a child who was a victim of rape and murder in Lalitnagar village, he further said.

Mahmudul Hasan, inspector-in-charge of the Kankonhat police check post in Godagari, said it is assumed that the deceased was involved in theft, rape and murder.

After an autopsy at RMCH morgue, Shamim's body will be handed over to his family and a case will be filed in this incident, the police official added.
