Hundreds of readymade garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Gazipur Road on Saturday demanding an immediate payment of their unpaid wages and festival bonus.
Workers of ‘Style Craft Garment’ took to the streets, which created a long tailback on the busy route amid rush of home goers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The demonstrators alleged that the management of the factory were not paying the last seven months’ dues to around 750 employees, including officers and workers.
Besides, partial salaries and allowances for several months of 2019 and 2020 are pending payment.
In addition, the factory workers alleged that they did not receive any increment for the last four years and Eid bonuses for the past two years.
Industrial police arrived at the scene of protest after receiving information and calmed the protesters down. However, they only dispersed after it started pouring suddenly around noon, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gazipur Sadar police station. Additional members of the police have been stationed in the factory area, he added.
