Mayor Atiqul launches anti-dengue campaign flouting health guidelines

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has launched an anti-dengue campaign from the capital’s Mirpur on Monday, while gathering hundreds of people violating health guidelines set by the government amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing the campaign at Shah Ali Mazar gate area, the DNCC mayor requested citizens to keep their residences clean to prevent the reproduction of Aedes mosquito, the vector responsible for transmitting the dengue virus.

He also asked all to ensure that water does not accumulate or become stagnant anywhere in their house, rooftops and surrounding areas to prevent all possible breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a press release on Monday, said at least 279 dengue patients were admitted at 41 hospitals across Dhaka in a span of 24 hours till 8:00am.

Saying that it was not possible for DNCC to control the spread of dengue and Chikungunya alone, the mayor also asked all government and non-government agencies to come forward in this regard.

Many of those who gathered at the event were seen ignoring social distancing measures to stop the spread of Covid-19, while some were also seen without facemasks.

DGHS reported total 3,182 dengue cases this year, including 524 in

last two days of this month and 2,286 in July. The health department also recorded 4 suspected deaths due to dengue at the time when Bangladesh was facing Covid-19.

DGHS on Sunday counted a total of 20,916 deaths among 12,64,328 positive cases since the country first identified Covid positive cases on March 8, and death 10-days later.

Dhaka-14 constituency Member of the Parliament (MP) Aga Khan Mintu, Dhaka-16 MP Elias Uddin Mollah, DNCC Chief Health Officer Zobaidur Rahman, among others, were also present at the event, said a DNCC press release.
