Hilsha prices go up in city markets
Hilsha is considered one of the tastiest fishes – Rajib Dhar

With demand rising during the ongoing peak fishing season, Hilsha prices increased by Tk 150-250 in the last few days in the capital’s kitchen markets.

Medium and big Hilsa were selling at Tk 950-1,400 per kg, and small ones at Tk 600-700 per kg, in retail markets on Tuesday.

Joydev Rajbonshi, a fish trader in Mirpur, said there was sufficient supply of Hilsha in the market, but prices had not come down yet.

Hilsha is considered one of the tastiest fishes, and that is why customers like it, he said.

Customers in different kitchen markets in Mirpur, Karwan Bazar, and Mohakhali preferred buying Hilsha, locally known as the “king of fish”.

Aminul Haque, a customer at Mohakhali market, said Hilsha prices were higher compared to the last few days.

“My parents love this fish far more than any other. That is why I am here to buy it,” he said.

Some customers also claimed only a limited number of traders were selling Hilsa in various kitchen markets, and that is why they could easily ask for higher prices. On Monday, the government permitted 52 trading companies to export Hilsha to India on the occasion of Durga Puja.

The commerce ministry allowed each company to export a maximum of 40 tonnes of Hilsha to India. The export permission will remain effective till October 10.
