Tanti Bazar turns safe haven for stolen gold

Old Dhaka’s Tanti Bazar has become a safe haven for stolen gold as inter-district robbery gangs across the country in coordination with a syndicate safely sell their gold in the market.

Stolen gold is regularly brought to Tanti Bazar market from the surrounding districts of Dhaka, including Tangail, Sirajganj, Narsingdi, Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Brahmanbaria and Cumilla, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police came to learn after investigating a number of recent robberies.

CID also gathered further information while investigating two separate incidents of robberies at Dhaka’s Rapa Plaza marker and in Ashulia.

After the incident, CID arrested 11 people, including a female for her alleged involvement with such incident, said Mukta Dhar, special superintendent of police in CID.

“Five of them have given confessional statements before the court about their involvement in the theft of gold shops,” Mukta Dhar said in a press briefing on Wednesday.

She said that 19 gold shops were robbed at Nayarhat Bazar under Ashulia police station on September 6. A case was filed at the police station in that incident.

Later, CID arrested a woman named Shahana Akhter, 24, from Dhaka’s Madhya Badda area on September 15 and recovered Tk 2,44,640 and 3/4 bhori gold from her house.

On the basis of her information, police arrested two more people: Miraj Mintu, 38, and Kamal Khan, 39.

All of the arrestees made a confessional statement before the court, Mukta said.

Moreover, CID arrested Anwar Hawladar, 39, Delwar Hossain Khalifa, 36, Abdur Rahim, 55, Al Miraj alias Mintu, 38, Kamal Kha, 39, and Md Sagar, 40, for their alleged involvement with the robbery in Nayarhat of Ashulia.

After their arrest, the CID confirmed that the stolen gold was bought by gold traders Sabuj Roy, 32, and Abdur Rahim, 31, in Tanti Bazar.

They were later taken into the CID custody.

CID recovered 20 bhori looted gold from a rented house of Abdur Rahim in Dhaka’s Nayabazar area, Mukta Dhar said.

Sabuj Roy and Abdur Rahim also confessed to being involved in a robbery at Rajlaxmi Jewelers at Rapa Plaza in Dhanmondi on February 7, she said adding that 12 bhori gold were recovered from Sabuj Roy’s house in Nayabazar area.

Sabuj Roy and Abdur Rahim in their statement identified that Khanja Corporation, Razia Bulian Store, Sumon Bulian Store and Gold Shop in Tanti Bazar buy stolen gold from them, Mukta Dhar added.

She further said that the investigation into the robbery cases in Ashulia and Rapa Plaza has identified illegal business circles in Tanti Bazar and legal action is being taken against the unscrupulous traders.
