BTRC starts shutting down unregistered news portals

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, in line with a High Court order, has started shutting down or blocking all unregistered online news portals across the country.

Confirming the matter, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar said, “The process has already begun since Tuesday afternoon.”

“BTRC has created a list of unregistered news portals in line with the High Court order and is shutting them down,” added the minister.

“Authorities concerned must contact BTRC if any registered online news portal gets shut down by mistake. If they can show proper documents, their sites will be unblocked,” the minister further added.

Meanwhile, a number of news portals such as bdnews24, banglanews24, Jagonews, The Business Standard, which got blocked earlier in the day, were unblocked after 6:00pm.

Tuesday’s move by BTRC came after the High Court on September 14 directed it and the Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) to close the unregistered news portals within seven days.

The court also asked them to submit a report after implementing the order within seven days of getting the written copy of the order.

Earlier on May 5, a legal notice was sent to the mass media asking them to formulate an ethical code of conduct for publishing any news, including sensitive news.
