ECNEC okays Sayedabad plant project with Tk2,921cr extra cost

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant (Phase-III) project with an additional cost of Tk 2,921 crore.

The approval came from the ECNEC meeting held at the NEC conference room in the capital, with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The prime minister joined the meeting virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban.

After the meeting, Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters nine projects — five revised and four new — had been placed at the meeting, and all those had been approved.

“The nine projects involve an estimated cost of Tk 6,551.27 crore. Of the amount, Tk 3,742.29 crore will come from the government exchequer, Tk 26 crore from the own funds of the organisations concerned, and Tk 2,782.76 crore from foreign assistance,” he added.

Among the approved revised projects, the biggest was Dhaka WASA’s Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant (Phase-III) (First Revision). Its total cost became Tk 7,518 crore after the extra cost was approved.

Of the amount, Tk 2,625.23 crore will come from the government exchequer, Tk 4,862.79 crore as project assistance, and the remaining Tk 30 crore from the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority.

The project aimed at reducing the use of groundwater in the capital will be implemented by June 2025, Mannan said.

Dhaka WASA will treat 45 crore litres of water per day at the plant.

Once completed, the total capacity of the three water treatment plants, including the existing two – Sayedabad Phase-I and Phase-II, will be 90 crore litres per day.

The ECNEC approved a Tk 1,435.89 crore project to upgrade the Tangail-Delduar-Lauhati-Saturia-Kawalipara-Kalampur bus stand road to ensure safe communication for passengers, Mannan said.

The Roads and Highways Department will implement the project by December 2023.

Once completed, road communication of Tangail, Delduar, Nagarpur, Dhamrai, and Saturia upazilas with Manikganj and Dhaka will be smoother.

The other projects approved at the meeting were agriculture weather information system development (first revision) with an additional cost of Tk 93.18 crore; establishment of two agricultural training institutes at Jagannathpur and Mohongonj upazilas at a cost of Tk 356.08 crore; riverbank protection, re-excavation of small rivers, canals, and beels, and addressing waterlogging in Rangpur’s Pirganj upazila at a cost of Tk 165.59 crore; riverbank protection on both sides of the Kirtinasha River in Shariatpur at a cost of Tk 319.33 crore; building the Barapukuria-Bogura-Kaliakair 400kv line (first revision) with an additional cost of Tk 729.89 crore; and building railway tracks from Khulna to Mongla port (second revision) with an additional cost of Tk 459.27 crore.
