NBR holds lottery on EFD-generated receipts

For the ninth time, the National Board of Revenue held a lottery on Tuesday with the receipts generated through electronic fiscal devices against purchases made by consumers from stores.

The move aims at encouraging people to ask salespeople for machine-generated receipts in order to ensure that the actual amount of Value Added Tax, a type of consumption tax, goes to the state coffers properly.

The NBR held the draw on the invoices issued from September 1 to September 30, in order to give 101 prizes to buyers who bought from shops that used EFDs, a kind of transaction register.

The draw was held at the meeting room of the NBR building in the capital where NBR Chairman Abu Hena

Md Rahmatul Muneem was present as chief guest.

The first prize, which was Tk one lakh, went to the receipt number 001321MTWRVTF985 while the second prize Tk 50,000 went to the receipt number 000821RKNXUYC894.

And, the third prize, which was Tk 25,000, went to five receipt numbers and the numbers are 000421JCLZDTG786, 002821SJSBNDN608, 003421PLSQFMI596, 001321VNPKDME331 and 001321QAEYOO0806.

The NBR said it treats receipts on purchases from stores having EFDs as coupons.

The draw of lottery by receipts has been organised to encourage customers to pay VAT, said the NBR after holding an event at its headquarters.

EFD was first installed on August 25, 2019 by NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem to ensure transparency and accountability in VAT collection.

As of July, NBR has installed EFDs in 3,393 businesses. EFD is a modern accounting tool which is an improved version of the Electronic Cash Register.

NBR is able to know the actual transaction or sale information of the organization through this device. How much of this will be known as VAT.

As a result, VAT evasion will be stopped and the collection will be increased further.

A lottery draw for EFD invoices was held for the first time on February 5.
