No bill if internet disconnection lasts 3 days

Internet providers will no longer be allowed to charge monthly bills to their customers if the service remains disconnected for three consecutive days.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) issued a directive to all Internet Service Providers (ISP) in this regard on Thursday.

ISPs will be able to charge 50 per cent of the total monthly bill if the connection remains disconnected for one day and 25 per cent if the disconnection lasts two days in a row.

On June 6, the BTRC fixed the maximum tariff for broadband internet connection across the country under the “One Country, One Rate” plan. A customer currently pays Tk 500 a month for a 5 Mbps, Tk 800 for 10 Mbps, and Tk 1,200 for 20 Mbps broadband internet connection.

The prices are set for shared (1:8) bandwidth, and under the new guidelines, service providers will be able to offer unique packages, the BTRC said.

However, such packages must have approval from the regulator, and the minimum speed limit must be set at 5 Mbps.

Approval will also be required for new packages. The commission will take action against ISPs if any package is provided to customers without authorisation. The service charges must be published on the ISP’s website.

According to the BTRC, there were 15 million broadband internet users in the country at the end of this August. Broadband internet connections have doubled amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
