Ctg customs to auction 110 luxury cars in Nov

The Chattogram customs house is going to auction 110 luxury cars under the Carnet de Passage system on November 3 and 4.

It will sell the cars through the electronic auction (e-auction) system besides the usual one.

The Carnet de Passage system allows travellers or tourists to move through countries by driving their own vehicles.

Such vehicles are allowed to enter the travelling country on temporary import facilities without paying any duty and taxes.

The cars worth between Tk 1 crore and Tk 3 crore will be sold at the auction at lower prices, said a press release signed by Tofail Ahmed, joint commissioner of the Chattogram customs house.

There will be 26 Mitsubishi cars, 25 Mercedes-Benz, 25 BMW, seven Land Rover, seven Land Cruiser, a CR-V, six Lexus, five Ford, three Jaguar, a Daewoo, a Honda, and several other cars of world-famous brands.

Chattogram customs house sources said the vehicles had been brought to the country by British tourists of Bangladeshi descent through Chattogram port a decade ago.

The cars were seized due to the misuse of the duty-free facility.

The condition for the redemption of the vehicles with a bank guarantee was imposed, but they had not been redeemed and had remained in the port day after day.

Any individual or organisation can take part in the upcoming auction.

In case of an organisation, copies of the updated trade licence, the VAT registration certificate, or the tax identification number (TIN) certificate have to be submitted.

In case of an individual, copies of the national identity card and the TIN certificate have to be submitted.

If an individual wants to buy a car, he has to submit a tender in an envelope in the tender box kept at the customs offices in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Mongla.

Besides, if an individual wants to see the cars first, he has to apply to the department concerned by submitting his national identity card and a passport photo and get a pass in advance.
