26% of working people of Dhaka city are dependent more on readymade food for their pets.
With the breaking up of extended families and the increasing numbers of nuclear families, peoples’ interest in owning pets has risen from 25% to 65% within 10 years.
As urbanization started, people got used to city life leaving families in villages or small towns for job purposes. To avoid loneliness and depression, people prefer to own a pet.
There are varieties of pet food according to the age of the pet like child pet or adult pet. Whiskas, Smart Heart, Lara, Drools, Royal Canin, Pedigree and many more pet foods of various brands are available in Bangladeshi markets.
Chicken, Tuna fish, meat, liver and milk Flavor are manufactured in a packet which is easy to mix and serve to the pets. It’s also time consuming.
While talking with The Business Post, Tahera Akhter Bristy, co-owner of Pets for Life said, ‘we import pet products from Thailand and supply those at very reasonable prices so that all classes of pet owners can afford them. Some dishonest supplier sells adulterated food changing the logo of brands which is very harmful for pets and most of the pets die because of it. I would suggest the pet owners and pet lovers not to blindly depend on manufactured food. It can be optional but beside that, fresh or boiled fish or meat should be served to the pets.’
Dogs, Cats, Turtles, Rabbits and Pigeons are the most adoptable pets in Dhaka city. Pet lovers select their favorite pets as per their choice, mentality and personality. But cats and dogs are the most popular and preferable pets in Bangladesh.
Persian cat, Desi mixed cat, Mixed Breed cat, Bengal cat, Maine Coon, Exotic Shorthair and Ragdoll are some breeds of cats available in Bangladesh. Among all the breeds of dogs, Sarail Hound, Pomeranian, Indian Pariah Dog, Spitz, Labrador and Desi dogs are found in our country.
In Katabon of Dhaka, there are more than 100 pet shops serially in a row of a market where different types of pets and manufactured pet foods are available.
Proprietor of Birds Palace Pet Shop Babul Hawladar (Babu) said, ‘From my shop everyday around 10 packets of pet foods have been sold which have been imported from Thailand or Malaysia by pet food buyers and importers of Bangladesh. Seeing the affection and concern of human beings towards the animals, I get satisfaction. Here in my shop, there are various breeds of cats, dogs, birds and rabbits. Both male and female customers come to visit here to buy pet and pet foods. My 4 years experience of running this shop says that females are interested in adopting cats more where males choose owning dogs. The manufactured pet foods have protein which gives the pets’ proper nutrition.’
‘The foreign breeds of pets normally can’t digest a desi homemade food that’s why they need manufactured imported foods. Because of their cute outlook and disciplined behavior people love to own foreign breed pets. Some desi breed pet owners also buy imported pet foods thinking that imported food habits may change their pets’ wild attitude and transform those as well behaved ones, he added.’
Pets for life is one of the online platforms where pet food, dog products, cat products, small animal products, grooming products, pet carrying bags and other pet related accessories are found there.
Sumiya Alam, an independent working woman, owns a pet dog (Labrador). She lives alone in a flat and after spending all day at the office when she returns home, she feels the urgency to have someone to talk to or spend time with. Her pet named Michel gives her best company and she loves to play with Michel.
‘After the breakup of my 4 years relationship, I became totally depressed and my faith towards the human being has almost vanished. Then I decided to have a pet and thus Michel came into my life. After having the pressure of my office, I don’t like to cook food for myself most of the time at night. I depend on food delivery service (Foodpanda) and I also depend on ready-made food for my pet too. Monthly my pet needs 4 packets of pet food costing Tk 2000 and it is good enough for me’, said Sumiya Alam.
Pet Lovers Bangladesh, Cat Society and Puchi Family are some of the popular social media groups and millions of people are the followers of these groups. Here the activity of everyone’s pet, photos, videos etc are shared. Pet owners consider their pets as their children.
Nowadays owning a pet has become a trend and people love to go with this flow.
