Bangladesh now has most green RMG factories

Bangladesh reached a new milestone of having 150 US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified green RMG factories – the highest in the world.

One more Bangladeshi factory, Denim Processing Plant, got LEED certification on October 7.  

With the latest addition, Bangladesh now has 150 factories with LEED certification. Of these, 44 are platinum, 93 gold, nine silver and four lead-rated certificates, according to USGBC.

In May 2012, Bangladesh's Vintage Denim Studio was recognised as the first LEED platinum-certified factory in the world.

Now, Bangladesh has 170 LEED-certified factories, including garments and others, while Vietnam has 110, according to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). 

BGMEA said that another 400 garment factories are now waiting for LEED certification.

The top seven green factories in the world are in Bangladesh, it said.
