Even almost three years into the construction of six new textile vocational institutions and development of seven existing ones, progress of the entire project is only 1.53 per cent.

The Ministry of Textiles and Jute has undertaken the project titled “Developing seven existing textile vocational institutes and installing six new textile vocational institutes” at a cost of Tk 353.90 crore.

According to the development project proposal, the project is supposed to be completed within December 2021 from January 2019.

Till August, the progress of the project is only 1.53 per cent.

However, the ministry has sent a revised proposal to the Planning Commission for an extension and also for an increase in cost of the project. According to the ministry, there are 42 textile vocational institutions in the country.

In a steering committee meeting held recently, Secretary to the Ministry of Textile and Jute Md Abdul Mannan expressed dissatisfaction over the progress of the project.

“After passing almost three years, progress is only 1.53 per cent which is very unsatisfactory. The project director must complete the project within the shortest time frame,” Mannan said.

He added that the project director should work enthusiastically and be more result-oriented to implement the project; plus he should communicate with the Planning Commission and inform the Ministry of Textile and Jute about the progress.

According to sources, the project director, said now land acquisition effort is under way requiring more time and finance to get the project work done.

Seeking anonymity, an official of Social Infrastructure Division under the Planning Commission said: “We have received the revised RDPP on the project. We will call a project evaluation committee meeting on it soon for approval.”

Six new Textile Vocational Institutes will be established in Naogaon, Netrokona, Sirajganj, Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Noakhali districts.

The seven textile vocational institutes are---Textile Vocational Institute in Barguna, Textile Vocational Institute in Narayanganj, Textile Vocational Institute in Noakhali, Textile Vocational Institute in Thakurgaon, Textile Vocational Institute in Mymensingh, Textile Vocational Institute in Jamalpur and Textile Vocational Institute in Munshiganj.
