Russia keen to cement trade ties with Bangladesh

The Russian Federation is eager to strengthen bilateral trade relation with Bangladesh which is far from reaching an optimum level due to lack of direct banking relationship and Letter of Credit (LC) opening facility.

Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Md Jashim Uddin said this during a courtesy call with the Russian Ambassador to Dhaka Alexander Vikentyevich Mantitsky on Wednesday.

“Besides readymade garments, Bangladesh can export a good number of products including those of light engineering, plastics, medicines, and frozen food items to Russia,” observed the leader of the apex trade body.

According to the Russian envoy, his country is keen to strengthen relations with Bangladesh in the field of bilateral trade and investment.

“We are proud to be a partner in the development journey of Bangladesh through an active participation in various development projects including the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant,” he said.

The ambassador noted that the full potential of trade between the two countries has yet to be explored and realised and Moscow would like to focus on all these.

The FBCCI signed a cooperation agreement with the then Soviet Union in December 1987.

The trade body inked another such deal with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Russian Federation in 2006 and with the Union of Moscow Chambers of Commerce and Industry in 2019.

The FBCCI president and the Russian ambassador have, thereby, agreed to reconsider the agreements reached a long time ago.

“The FBCCI will soon send information and drafts to Bangladesh Embassy in Russia. A Russian trade representative is scheduled to visit Bangladesh next November,” Jashim also added.

At the same time, Alexander Mantitsky promised to hold a trade meeting with the FBCCI.

FBCCI senior vice-president Mostofa Azad ChowdhuryBabu; its vice-president Md HabibUllah Daw; Md Amin Helaly and CEO of the organisation Mohammad Mahfuzul Hoque were also present during the courtesy call made by the Russian envoy.
