After the rice import period ended on October 30, the price of the staple has started going up in both wholesale and retail markets across the country.

While visiting several kitchen markets in the capital on Thursday it was found that on average, rice price has risen up by Tk 2 to Tk 3 per kilogramme while Tk 100 to Tk 150 per sack.

Despite the fact, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) data runs counter to what was noticed in black and white across the markets.

The TCB data shows that fine rice sells at between Tk 58 and Tk 68 while medium one Tk 50 and Tk 56, and thick one Tk 45 and Tk 50.

The millers have hiked the price, the impact of which is hitting both retailers and wholesalers, said Mohammad Mahfuz, a rice trader at Karwan Bazar in the city.

Compared to the past week, the price has risen on average by Tk 2 to Tk 3 a kg. The Indian miniket rice sold Tk 51 a kg last week which is now Tk 53.

As per the regular price list of wholesale market, miniket is currently priced at Tk 54 to Tk 58 per kg while paijam Tk 45 to Tk 46 and Najir Shail Tk 64 to Tk 68 a kilogramme.

Bazar, said rice market is gaining steam; they have to purchase rice from millers by paying Tk 1.5 to Tk 2 more per kg.

“There is no notable impact in the market yet due to ample stock, but a fresh impact is likely very soon,” opined the trader.

On the other hand, some retailers said the price is same as it had been over last two weeks.

“We are selling rice at the same price as it was two weeks ago. As the import has stopped and transport workers went for an indefinite strike, there will be an impact on the market soon,” apprehended Mohammad Shaon, owner of Noakhali Rice Traders.

The government on August 25 allowed 400 importers to bring 15 lakh metric tons of rice by October 30 to tame rice price.

However, only a paltry amount of rice was imported till the October-30 deadline.
