Bangladesh observes World Diabetes Day

The World Diabetes Day was observed in Bangladesh with the theme “Access to diabetes care. If not now, when?” on Sunday to make people aware of the disease.

Bangladesh Diabetic Association arranged various programmes maintaining the Covid-19 health guidelines to observe the day.

Posters and leaflets on diabetes awareness were distributed among the people as part of an awareness campaign. No rally was held due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on this occasion.

The Diabetic Association also arranged free diabetes tests from 8:00am to 11:00pm at several areas in the capital including Rabindra Sarobar, Ramna Park, adjacent to various centres of the National Healthcare Network and at the Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences Hospital in Mirpur.

A discussion and a question-answer session among the patients and specialist doctors was also held at the BIRDEM Auditorium at 10:00am where Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam was present as the chief guest.

Professor Farooq Pathan, head of the Department of Endocrinology at BIRDEM General Hospital, delivered the keynote address.

Diabetic Association Vice President Abdul Mueed Chowdhury, Secretary-General Mohammad Saif Uddin, Director General of BIRDEM General Hospital Professor MKI Qayyum Chowdhury and others spoke at the discussion with National Professor AK Azad Khan in the chair.
