Italy keen to invest in leather industry

Italy has expressed its keen interest to invest in the potential leather sector in Bangladesh.

Italian ambassador to Bangladesh Enrico Nunziata expressed the interest during a courtesy call on BSCIC chairman Md. Mushtaq Hasan at BSCIC Bhaban in Tejgaon yesterday.

“Italian envoy has informed me that his country is interested in transferring green technology to generate bio-fertilizer and electricity from solid waste in Bangladeshi leather industry. Both the two countries will work together to manage solid waste in the leather industry," said BSCIC chairman in a press release.

Mushtaq Hasan also informed that Italy wants to ensure uninterrupted supply of solid waste to the plant if a joint venture is set up for the management of solid waste in the leather industry.

The BSCIC chairman also requested the Italian ambassador to urge his country’s entrepreneurs to come up with investment in different industries in BSCIC industrial parks.

During the call on, the BSCIC chairman also mentioned that BSCIC has formulated a master plan for building an industrialized Bangladesh in 2041. If the master plan is implemented, 100 eco-friendly industrial parks will be set up on 40,000 acres of land across the country.

He also called for Italian investment in these industrial parks, including transfer of Italian green technology.

In reply, the Italian ambassador said that Italy would work for the joint transfer of green technology between Bangladesh and Italy, increase Italian investment in Bangladesh and also to develop joint ventures in the future, according to the press release.

Additional secretary (BSIC, SME and BITAC) of the Ministry of Industries Kazi Sakhawat Hossain, members of BSCIC Board and senior officials of BSCIC were also present during the call on.
