No Covid-19 booster shots now: Zahid

The government will think about providing Covid-19 booster shots once the majority of Bangladesh’s population is inoculated, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said on Tuesday.

Speaking at an event in Dhaka’s State Guest House Padma, held to formally receive 15 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine as gift from Saudi Arabia, he said Bangladesh has vaccinated 5.5 crore people till date, and most of them are from vulnerable groups.

The minister, in another event held the same day, said the country has successfully tackled the Covid-19 spike, and the government is building eight hospitals with a cost of Tk 3,000 crore to ensure better healthcare services.

Inaugurating an international dermatologists’ conference at a city hotel, Maleque continued, “Among these facilities, we will also build a dedicated skin disease treatment institute. The government is working on digitising healthcare too.

“The Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh is comparatively better, and people here are leading a safer life. For this reason, businesses and production continued in the country at full speed. Bangladesh will perform better economically in the coming days.”

Zahid added that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed him to procure an adequate number of vaccine doses for everyone across the country. “We procured 21 crore doses of vaccine from different sources till date, and have received 11 crore of those shots.”

Bangladesh Medical Association’s President Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddinat the event among others.
