102 shops fined Tk 6.48 lakh for consumer fraud

The market monitoring team of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department has fined 102 shops Tk 6.48 lakh across the country for violating the consumer rights law.

The businesses were fined for committing irregularities in selling products and services.

As many as 36 officials of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) took part in a drive in 31 districts including in the capital on Wednesday.

Police, Health, Agriculture, Fisheries Department representative, Business leaders and the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) assisted them in carrying out the monitoring activities, DNCRP said in a media release.

It said many shops in Dhaka city were fined for selling counterfeit and expired products.

Many of them were found not using maximum retail price tag on their products while some products had no expiry date on them.

Most of the shops that came under fine were in Bongshal, Malibag, Santinagar and Baily road in Dhaka. A total of 39 markets across the country came under watch yesterday.

During the drive, the monitoring team also observed the sale of affordable essential commodities of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.

They also distributed leaflets and pamphlets for building awareness among customers and businesses.

DNCRP fined Tk 25,000 based on the complaint filed by two customers against two companies.

Against the complaint two customers got as per the rules 25 per cent of the fine -- Tk 6,250.
