Restaurant owners have demanded that the government recognise their business as an industry and sought policy support to survive the competitive market.

The demand came at a press briefing held in Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Saturday arranged by the Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association.

The restaurant owners argued that the sector has a huge role in agriculture, tourism, economy and employment, but is neglected since the government does not give a damn to it.

Citing the government statistics, Secretary General Imran Hasan of the association maintained that the country has around 4 lakh restaurants where around 30 lakh people are currently employed.

“The online food enterprises charge for delivery arbitrarily which we bear the brunt of,” according to Imran.

The business leader urged the government to form a uniform policy in this regard, so a level-playing field can be ensured.

The restaurateur also complained of unnecessary harassment by the law enforcement apparatus during the operation of mobile court.

The association viewed that by 2030, around 30 per cent people in Bangladesh will depend on restaurants.

“If we can move forward plan-wise, new entrepreneurs will emerge while more jobs will be created – all will contribute to the country’s GDP,” it said.

The organisation further demanded a level-playing field for all by ensuring mandatory Vat for all restaurants.
