SC seizes judicial power of Judge Kamrunnahar

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday seized judicial power of former judge of Dhaka 7th Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Mosammat Kamrunnahar.

A five-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after holding hearing on a criminal petition.

The SC issued the order as the judge was found allowing bail to a rape case accused in spite of apex court’s stay on the matter.

Confirming the matter to BSS, Supreme Court spokesperson Mohammad Saifur Rahman said Mosammat Kamrunnahar appeared before the Appellate Division during the hearing of the criminal petition.

“The Appellate Division, after holding hearing on the matter, ordered to seize her criminal trial power,” Rahman, also a special officer at the High Court Division, added.

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on November 14 had temporally seized trial conducting power of Mosammat Kamrunnahar and asked her not to sit in the courtroom from that day.

She was later attached to Law and Justice Division.

The judge drew flak from all the sections in society with her observation, asking police not to register rape cases 72 hours after the incident.

She came up with the observation while pronouncing judgement in the sensational Raintree hotel double rape case on November 11. Dhaka 7th Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in its judgement, acquitted all the accused of the charges.
