The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has seized 86 gold bars from under a seat of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.

The gold bars weigh 9.97 kilogrammes and are worth about Tk 7 crore.

The BG-148 flight coming from Dubai landed at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Saturday morning, said CIID Director General Shahidul Islam in a press release.

The release said the CIID had been tipped off about possible smuggling of gold on the flight, and its officials then took positions at various points of the airport.

The officials searched the plane after it landed and found four suspicious bundles of gold bars.

A departmental case and a criminal lawsuit are being filed under the Customs Act 1969 in this regard, said the CIID.

The directorate has so far seized around 111.5kg gold worth about Tk 78 crore in the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to officials.
