Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) on Tuesday started demolishing risky parts of two buildings that recently tilted due to digging of canal at Majhirghat in Chattogram metropolis.
On Monday night, a three-storey and another two-storey building collapsed on the banks of Gulzar canal in Fakirpara area of port city while a temple was also damaged. Soon after the incident, residents of two buildings were evacuated.
The buildings were built following unauthorised designs which caused the incident after canal digging in Majhirghat, said CDA Engineer Mohammad Hassan.
“We are demolishing the risky parts carefully, so that owners of the buildings can rebuild them later”, he added.
Members of the Army’s Engineering Cores were digging the Gulzar canal under CDA’s project to resolve waterlogging problem in the area.
Locals claimed that the buildings titled due recent excavations in the area.
Meanwhile, locals from Fakir Para area staged a sit-in programme in Majhirghat Strand Road from 11:30 am to 2:30pm demanding shelter and compensation over the incident.
