Blender, grinder popularity shoots up on consumer demand

Blenders and grinders – kitchen appliances used for mixing or grinding food ingredients – are gaining popularity in Bangladesh for bringing more comfort and convenience to the busy lives of city dwellers.

Once mostly used by the economically privileged, such appliances have now become common items even in the population’s lower-income households, said industry insiders, adding that blenders and grinders provide an easy solution for balancing household and outdoor chores.

Managing Director Mohammad Naveed Ahmed of Miyako Electronics – one of the top brands for electronic home appliances in Bangladesh, said, “Currently, the size of the home appliance market is worth about Tk 500 crores with more than 20 per cent annual growth rate.

“A number of factors played a vital role in expanding the use of these electronics. The most important factors are availability, affordability, rapid expansion of the rural electrification process, globalisation, and a growing middle and affluent class population.”

Blender and grinder machines are used to mix, crush, paste or emulsify food. The machines feature blender containers with rotating metal blades at the bottom, powered by an electric motor that is in the base.

People in this region love to consume juice in summer and spicy food items during festivals and other

occasions, and this has contributed to the popularity of blenders in Bangladesh, a number of sellers told The Business Post.

Local manufacturers vie for dominance

A few years ago, the market of blender and grinder machines was dominated by foreign companies, said Kamaruzzaman Kamal, director of marketing of (PRAN-RFL).

“But now, more than five local companies are manufacturing these products and trying to grab larger shares of the market,” he added.

A market research conducted by Light Castle Partners, a business consulting firm, revealed that the country's home appliance market was $251.41 in 2017.

The demand for blender and grinder machines is nearly 2 lakh to 2.5 lakh units per month, while the annual growth is about 20 per cent – 25 per cent each year, said Md Al Imran, chief business officer (home appliance) of Walton.

“Walton is residing at the top in the country's electronics’ market. On average we sell nearly 40,000 to 50,000 units of blenders and grinders monthly,” he said.

Besides, sales of Walton home appliance products have increased by 72.38 per cent, according to the annual report 2020-21 of the tech giant.

Mohammad Naveed Ahmed, managing director of Miyako Electronics, said, “We are selling more than one lakh pieces of blender and grinder machines round the year as it reduces the hardship of the cooking process and saves time.”

The demand for blenders and grinders remains strong around the year and gains momentum during the Eid festivals and summer, said a seller in the capital’s new market.

Md Imran, product manager of Conion, said the company sells more than 600 units of Blender and Grinder machines each month.

Some popular brands of blenders and grinders in the country are Miyako with the price range of Tk 1,200 – Tk 10,000 while Walton’s price varies from Tk 1,850 – Tk 15,000 and Panasonic blenders and grinders are available at Tk 3,800 – Tk 13,490, Singer at Tk 2,000-Tk 8,000, and Conion at Tk 2,000 – Tk 12,000.

Besides, blenders and grinders of Heigan, Philips, Butterfly, Jomuna, and Kiam are also popular among buyers.

Although more than 15 branded blender and grinder machines are available in the capital’s stadium market, most buyers prefer Indian and Miyako machines, said Md Imran Hossain, proprietor of Electronics Tool and Cookeries in the stadium market.

Fahamida Khatun, a private job holder, said that the use of blender machines has been providing massive support in her household works while at the same time saving her time as well.

Availability of electrical home appliances appeared as blessings for people as modern life is becoming busier with time.
