Desktop and laptop computers are now the top-selling IT products at the BCS Computer City in the capital’s Agargaon.

BCS Computer City Shop Owners Association President AL Mozher Imam Chowdhury told The Business Post, “The current desktop and laptop sales volume is about 60 per cent while the remaining 40 per cent comprises other IT products.”

He said most of the corporate houses, businesses, and government offices buy IT products from the market where the monthly turnover is over Tk 150-200 crore.

Md Habib, a final-year student at National University who came to the market to purchase a desktop computer and some IT accessories, told The Business Post he had chosen the BCS Computer City among other Dhaka markets as it is reliable.

“Most of the customers come here because of reliability, and we are committed to delivering genuine IT products as per their demands,” said Techno Care Chief Executive Officer Md Jahedul Alam.

He said desktop and laptop sales had increased by 10 to 15 per cent, hoping this would increase further this month because of the fair.

This year’s fair began on December 7 and will end today.

“Ryans Computers is the biggest laptop and desktop seller at the BCS Computer City. Our sales have increased gradually as we have achieved customers’ trust and reliability,” said its Manager SM Arifuzzaman.

Most of the IT products at the market are imported from China, Thailand, Malaysia, and India. Smart Technologies (BD) Ltd, Computer Source, Star Tech and Engineering Ltd, Global Brand (Pvt) Ltd, UCC, and Excel Technologies Ltd are among the prominent importers.

To rent a showroom in the market, a businessman should have at least eight to 10 years of IT business experience with a good reputation, deposit rents for 18 months in advance, and wait for many years, said a businessman on condition of anonymity.

“It is quite impossible for a new businessman to rent a space at the BCS Computer City even if he is keen to start a business there,” he added.

Most of the businessmen at the BCS Computer City have branches at the Multiplan Centre in Elephant Road.

“If a customer buys an authorised product, there is no difference whether he purchases it from the BCS Computer City or the Multiplan Centre,” said Mozher.

The BCS Computer City started its journey on September 11, 1999. It is a distinctive, well-maintained building with the most elaborate architecture and all modern amenities.

The four-storey building with covered floor space of more than one lakh square feet has over 156 outlets retail and wholesale outlets of computer hardware, accessories, peripherals, and other computer-related products.

A computer fair is arranged there every year, in addition to different events throughout the year, to attract visitors.
