Death toll reaches 44, another case filed, 2 jailed

Rescuers on Tuesday recovered two more bodies from the Sugandha River, causing the death toll from the MV Obhijan-10 fire to reach 44.

On the same day, the shipping court in Dhaka sent two staff members of the launch to jail while another murder case was filed by a relative of a victim with Jhalakathi Sadar police station.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Monday arrested one of the four owners of the launch, Md Ham Jalal Sheikh, from Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital.

The fire service recovered the two bodies from the river at Shachilapur, adjacent to the Jhalakathi launch terminal, but their identities could not be confirmed.

Officials said one of the deceased is a 12-year-old boy while the other is a 32-year-old man.
