Covid cases keep rising, one more dies

The number of Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh keeps rising as the country registered one more death and 495 new infections in the last 24hrs until Wednesday morning.

The positivity rate rose to 2.37 per cent from Tuesday’s 2.10 per cent.

Bangladesh reported daily covid cases above 400 after two months. On October 19, the country logged 469 new Covid cases with seven deaths.

According to the latest data, the total number of fatalities reached 28,063 while the positivity rate stood at 2.37 per cent. After adding the fresh cases, the total number of caseloads jumped to 15,84,518 said a regular bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 20,914 samples at 851 laboratories across the country.

At the same time, 372 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24 hours, raising the overall recovery to 15,48,416.

The official tally showed that the virus killed 28,063 people so far, the statement added. The recovery count rose to 15,48,416 after another 372 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the past one day.

From the beginning of the pandemic, 97.72 per cent Covid-19 patients recovered among the infected people while 1.77 percent died, the DGHS statistics showed.

The DGHS said among the total 28,063 fatalities, 12,255 occurred in Dhaka division, 5,688 in Chattogram, 2,060 in Rajshahi, 3,618 in Khulna, 949 in Barishal, 1,273 in Sylhet, 1,373 in Rangpur and 847 in Mymensingh divisions.

Meanwhile, the global Covid cases reached 282,912,372 and fatalities reached 5,417,212.

Three more Omicron cases detected

Three more Covid cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in Bangladesh, raising the total tally to seven.

According to GISAID, a global initiative on sharing all influenza data, shared the results on Wednesday.

With the fresh one, seven people have been diagnosed with Omicron in Bangladesh. Earlier, two more Omicron cases were detected in the country on Tuesday.

On December 11, Bangladesh reported its first two cases of the Omicron variant in two members of the Bangladesh women cricket team.

They returned from Zimbabwe after taking part in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers. The event was, however, called off midway due to the surge of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

After coming back to Dhaka, they were isolated in a hotel.

On December 6, the health department confirmed that two women cricketers were Covid-positive.

However, on December 20, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed both the players tested negative for Covid.
