The agriculture ministry implemented 24 per cent of the annual development programme (ADP) in five months of the current fiscal year, Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said on Thursday.

The ADP implementation rate was much higher than the national average, he said while addressing a meeting arranged to review ADP implementation at the ministry.

The national average ADP implementation rate was 19 per cent from July to November of the 2021-22 fiscal year.

In this financial year, 70 projects have been taken up under the ministry with allocations of Tk 2,918 crore.

“The people of Bangladesh are the owners of this money. Transparency is needed in spending money. People need to be informed about its use,” the minister said while instructing project officials to spend the money sincerely.

Razzaque advised scientists and officials concerned to invent crop varieties to reduce import dependency.

“Import dependency must be reduced. Our scientists have to invent varieties from our own crops that will suit our weather condition,” he said.

“Our scientists need to become more active to be self-reliant. They need to work more intensively as well.”

He also instructed officials to make new varieties available to farmers more quickly. The ministry’s Senior Secretary Mesbahul Islam moderated the meeting.
